  • The quantity and quality of the snow, unparalleled scenery and variety of terrain accessible via the Mammoth Lakes Trail System makes winter a favorite season in the Sierra. Some of the best frontcountry powder in the West can be accessed off the backside of Mammoth Mountain (regularly ranked among North America's top 10 ski resorts) or via a short climb to the western edge of the Sherwins Range from the road closure at the upper end of Lake Mary Road. For those who'll hike farther afield, the whole extent of the Mammoth Crest, from above Horseshoe Lake to Duck Pass, is a treasure trove of premier backcountry chutes and bowls.
