Starting from any of the Rainbow Falls Trailheads – from Reds Meadow Resort or Devils Postpile – the trail reaches a junction just inside the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Instead of taking the right fork down to Rainbow Falls, opt instead for the left. The trail continues down-valley for 8.6 miles to the Fish Creek Valley, crossing over the boundary between the Ansel Adams Wilderness and the John Muir Wilderness about halfway.

This trail can be accessed for a fee via the Reds Meadow Shuttle Service at Mammoth Mountain Ski Are Main Lodge Shuttle Stop #9 during the months of May, June, July, August, and the beginning of September. After Shuttle Service stops for the season, you may drive down to Reds Meadow for a fee and access the trailhead via the Rainbow Falls Trailhead. Follow the trail toward Rainbow Falls until you reach the clearly marked Fish Creek Trail junction on your left.
