The ride from Mammoth Lakes to Whitmore Pool is mostly downhill. As lap swimming is generally in the morning, you’ll have to get out early. Ignore the chill and enjoy the sunrise on the Sierra. The pool itself offers the most scenic lap swimming you’ve ever experienced. The ride back to town is mostly uphill, often against the wind, so plan on twice as much time to get back. The wide shoulder on Highway 395 puts plenty of room between you and the cars, but you may want to detour onto rougher but quieter Substation Road. The final 3-mile stretch up Highway 203 is a grind, but that's how you get your fitness!
