A locals' favorite, the Mammoth Rock Trail—described here as an out-and-back trail—is a highly scenic and in places moderately technical singletrack ride. From the Mammoth Rock trailhead on Sherwin Creek Road just past Sherwin Meadows Trailhead, climb the sandy wash up into the woods to what was once the main mule trail to the gold mines in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. The trail traverses the lower slopes of the Sherwin Range and passes below Mammoth Rock, a 250-million-year-old limestone and marble monolith. The trail ends at a switchback on upper Old Mammoth Road. Be alert on the descent; yield to hikers, runners and horseback riders.
