Cross Country Skiing the Obsidian Dome Blue Diamond Route

  • Obsidian Dome is formed from solidified lava and is a part of the Mono-Inyo volcanic chain. Historically, obsidian has been used to make arrowheads and stone tools. The cross county skiing experience includes two scenic loops which branch off of a USFS road that is groomed intermittently by the USFS. Route 5a loop is .65 mile and route 5b is 1.4 miles in length. Enjoy spectacular up-close views of Obsidian Dome, Wilson Butte, and the expansive long valley caldera looking south.

Snow totals have been limited, with accumulations ranging from a dusting to about 13" at favored weather stations in the northern half of the forecast area.
