Dog Sledding the Lookout Mountain Loop

  • When conditions are right, this loop provides great moderate to long-distance terrain for dogsled touring, with no major gains or losses in elevation and big views along the way through open Jeffrey pine forest to the Glass Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. Stage at the Lookout Mountain trailhead on the east side of Hwy 395 across from the Mammoth Scenic Loop. Head north, following the groomed trail clockwise around Lookout Mountain. Be aware of snowmobilers. Start early in the morning, when the snow is frozen and firm.
