The Heart Lake Trail is a popular easy/moderate out-and-back hike—up on the way out, down on the way back—through several dense patches of colorful aspen trees and terrific views stretching across the Mammoth Lakes Basin to the Mammoth Crest and the Minarets. From the east side of the Coldwater Parking Area, follow the wide trail across the creek and stay right toward Heart Lake. The trail becomes tunnel-like in places through the trees and then climbs above for excellent perspective. Continue up to Heart Lake if you have energy. Visit the Mammoth Consolidated Mine site on your way in or out, and remember that many archaeological and historic sites exist throughout the Inyo National Forest and on adjacent federal and state lands. These sites are special places that contain irreplaceable information of our past and are protected by law. Please take only photographs, leave only footprints, and report vandalism.
