Mammoth Consolidated Mine

Destination adopted by: Richard and Angie Plaisted (Mammoth Consolidated Mine Spur)

  • A short interpretive trail leads from the east side of the Coldwater/Duck Pass parking area to the site of Arch Mahan's Mammoth Consolidated Mine camp. Active from 1927 to 1933, the mine produced only about $100,000 worth of gold from tunnels dug into Red Mountain. Today the site includes the original miners' bunkhouses, the Mahan cabin and, up the slope, the remains of a diesel-powered ore-processing mill. Mahan shifted into the tourist business in 1934, purchasing Reds Meadow Pack Station. Many archaeological and historic sites exist throughout the Inyo National Forest and on adjacent federal and state lands. These sites are special places that contain irreplaceable information of our past and are protected by law. Please take only photographs, leave only footprints, and report vandalism.

“Easy pleasant family hike. 4 yr old and 62 yr old both enjoyed the easy stroll thru history. Great finds; flowers, mine equipment, mind shaft, tailings, and buildings along a flat shaded trail. Great for our little people.”
